There has been a lot of debate over free traffic sources, and do they work. What I am going to do, is break it all down to you from experience. I have tried almost every online marketing method, and still trying new ones to this day.
Classified Sites: I actually did get many conversions from using classifieds. But it was mainly from paid ads, online and offline. What I got from free ads was mainly leads. I also gained the extra benefit of my site getting indexed from all the online classified submissions.
Yahoo Answers: The main thing I like about this, you are really helping people with your answers, and the site has targeted traffic potential. It also has the competitive element of users voting on the best answers. So you can help others, and at the same time promote your link. Join and find questions relevant to your link, and try to give the most informative answers.
Article Submissions: Basically, the most powerful form of free online marketing. Yes it's work, and you must have some degree of writing skills, but it is rewarding in many ways. An original article will remain online virtually forever, and with a link to your website or affiliate URL. This creates a flow of organic traffic to your site, bringing you profits!
Blog/Forum Commenting: A great way to share your opinions, and promote your link. But understand, your comments should always be sincere and related to the post. Add good content to support the blog/forum. Do not just try to write an ad, and be like a spam artist! If you post say, 10-20 comments a week, this will grow into a valuable link base and add to your SEO efforts. Use the search engines to find blog/forum posts related to what you are trying to promote.
Word Of Mouth: Now this here is the best free method for advertising anything. There is nothing better to a consumer, than to get a personal opinion on a product. If they have a friend, or know of someone who purchased a service or product, then finding out what that person thinks of it is the best reassurance. So in that respect, always carry business cards, and always be ready to talk about your online products or services to potential customers. Remember, people respect an honest opinion over any suspicious advertising. Try to get honest testimonials from your customers, that helps to sway decisions.
