Do You Really Want To Work From Home?

A few years ago, I ran a weekly column for work at home moms, or those who want to be. One day, a young mom said to me, "I started a virtual assistant business two years ago, but I still don't make enough to stay home with my children. My husband told me to choose one or the other: my job or the business. I don't know what I want. What should I do?"

I felt for that young mom.

I'm an introvert by nature and tend to shy away from any form of publicity that requires me to meet and greet people in person, as a result, my business isn't as far as it could be. I've turned down television interviews, radio interviews, and even a chance to be on a reality television show.

But what I couldn't relate to was her husband's words, "Choose one or the other."

I am lucky. I have a wonderful husband who believes that I can have the best of both worlds. The only person stopping me from doing anything is me.

When we started talking, what I realized was that her husband wasn't telling her she had to choose because he wasn't supportive. He was telling her to choose because she was miserable and she kept telling him she wasn't doing what was necessary to achieve her dream.

Starting a home based business is hard enough when you are a stay-at-home mom raising two children, it's a completely different story when you're a full-time working mom raising two kids and trying to build a business, too.

So I asked her, "Do you really want to work from home or do you feel pressured into doing it because everyone tells you that it's the best thing for your children?"

I didn't even give her a chance to answer, because I wanted her to really think about that question.

I continued to bring the point home by telling her, "If you truly want to be home with your children, but don't want to work a business, sit down with your husband and let him know how you feel. Show him how much money goes out the door every month just so you can work and how much is actually left after those work-related expenses are taken into account. Then ask him if there is a way you can cut down your monthly household expenses so that you can stay home with the kids and be more attentive to his needs when he comes home from work."

"If you want to be home with your children, but don't want to give up your own identity and feel working from home will save your sanity, than you really need to set some realistic goals and stick to them."

The next question I asked her was, "How badly do you really want to work from home?"

"Do you want it bad enough to sacrifice sleep? Bad enough to work when your children are napping, in school, watching their favorite television show, or on a play date? Bad enough to work your regular job during the day, deal with your kids until they go down for the night, and then work your virtual assistant business in the evenings-often until 1 or 2 in the morning?"

She wasn't sure. She thought it would be a lot easier to get her business running since she worked as a secretary in her day job.

So I told her, "Your business will never replace your current job until you decide to make a few sacrifices. If you don't have enough hours in the day to work a full-time job, a part-time business, and raise your children (and honestly, who does?!) then you need to take a hard look at your life and your situation."

Which brought me to a question that she hadn't even considered before, "How much do you really need to make in order to stay home?"

"After you subtract the expenses associated with working such as childcare, lunches at work, gas to and from work, extra car insurance because you're driving those extra miles, the taxes that are taken out of your check, etc., how much money is really left from your salary at the end of the month?"

"Can you make that from your business now?"

That question was the eye-opener.

After deducting work-related expenses, she was only bringing home $500 a month. She was already making $500 a month in her virtual assistance business after expenses.

She had found her answer...

If you're in the same boat, but you have not reached the income you need to bring home, ask yourself the following questions and take action:

* Where can I cut monthly expenses/bills?
* Do I really need cable television?
* Do I really need a gardener to mow the lawn?
* Can I move into a smaller house, with a smaller monthly payment?
* Can I consolidate my bills and get a lower monthly payment without raising my interest rate?
* Do I have stuff in my home that I can sell in a garage sale (or on Craigslist) to pay down the debt or get us to a monthly budget that works?

If you desire to work from home, you can do it but you'll need to take an objective look at your lifestyle and be willing to make sacrifices until you reach your end goal.

I just got a reply from the customer support of Adbrite telling me that I cannot use their system into my blog here at blogger 'coz they are no longer accepting site using free blog hosting that is. I'm not aware of this until I finally reached a maximum of ten times trying to submit my blog into their system hoping for it to be approve. Well it's a bad new for 'coz I know you adbrite is one way of earnng money through blog.

Alexa And Google PageRank - When To Check Your Website's Stats?

Every webmaster at some point starts to worry about his/her website's rankings and how much traffic the site is receiving on a daily basis. They work hard every chance they get to promote their site through social networks and by commenting on other blogs. But what happens when you work hard for a few hours per day and then you wait till the midnight update to check your stats only to find that you've gained nothing or at least nothing close to the amount of work you put into it?
In order to measure how fast your site is gaining traffic, you need to know what to check for and more importantly when to check. Two things that matter so much especially to advertisers when they evaluate your site are Alexa Rank and Google PageRank.
If you have an Alexa Rank lower than one hundred thousand, it simply means that your site is in the top 0.1 percentile which is an indication that your site has a high amount of traffic, however the quality of your site depends on the quality of back-links it has with other high quality sites. This is where Google PageRank play a very important role.
Google divided their page ranks between 1-10. Usually websites with a rank of at least 4 are considered very high on quality, and those with a page rank 6 or higher are considered superb. It's very difficult to get a page rank higher than 6 unless you're a big company or perhaps even a search engine.
This brings us to our main topic today of when should you check your website's stats? Alexa updates their ranks every night usually around midnight, so this means that if you left "DOFOLLOW" comments on high quality blogs then an hour later you check your Alexa Rank, you simply will not see any difference. You have to wait until Alexa updates their database.
Also if you leave your comments after an Alexa crawler had already visited that website and checked any new links coming out of it, then waiting for the midnight update still wont help, since Alexa already visited that website once that day, you're going to have to wait till the next visit by Alexa on the next day. Keep in mind that part of Alexa's evaluation to your site includes how many people visited your site while having the Alexa Tool-Bar installed.
Now, if you think that Google's page ranks are any easier, think again! Google usually updates its ranks once every few months, usually a few times per year. So if you keep checking your Google PageRank everyday especially if you're a new website, you will get discouraged and disappointed every time you check because not only is it very difficult to gain a rank with Google, it also takes a long time.
Make sure to do all your site promotions before any search engines (at least Google) or other services (such as Alexa) visit the sites your promoting on in order to make it into the update cycle of that day.

Can You Make Money Taking Online Surveys?

One question is not "can you make money taking online surveys", but "how much money can you make taking online surveys".
Over the past 4 years I have been participating in online surveys and have made extra cash each month while doing so. However, when I first started I responded to an ad that I saw online that promised the opportunity to replace my full time income with the income that I would make from taking surveys. I am afraid that has not happened. I have made as little as $9.00 in a month only to follow that up a few months later with a $700.00 month. The amounts vary each month depending upon how much time I spend taking surveys and how many surveys that are offered to me each month. It is my experience that if I average $3.00 a survey I will make around $100.00 extra month. That is all that I expect and it is really just a benefit when I think about how much fun I have taking the surveys. So the answer to the question is "yes, you can make money with surveys but you will probably not replace your income from work doing so.
The second questions is "how much should it cost me to start"
The answer to this question is a resounding "NOTHING"!! Signing up and taking surveys is free and if you find a site that charges you a fee to sign up then leave the site and look for another free site. The dirty little secret that these websites do not want you to know is that the survey companies need you more than you need them. Without you taking their surveys they would not have any data to report to the companies that commission them. So do not pay to play.

Online surveys are not all created equal. Some paid surveys will take you 30 minutes to take and will pay you only 50 cents and some will take 5 minutes and pay you $50 dollars. There is no guaranteed way to see exactly how much money you will make. A majority of online surveys that I take are sent to me through my E-Mail. Most of these emails will say in the subject or message line how much the survey pays and what the expected length of time for the survey will be. At first I always ignored surveys that were very low paying and only took the ones that paid big bucks. I would be constantly deleting many survey opportunities. I started to notice a trend that all the really high paying surveys would be filled up really quickly, so unless you started the survey right away, often they would not be looking for any more opinions.
I started to take the smaller paying surveys and then I noticed the trend that has been the reason I have made so much money doing this. The companies will offer a small amount of money, and after you fill out the survey, they will offer you a second survey which will be the big money surveys. After I noticed this I started to take all of the smaller money surveys and now I know exactly how to get the best ones. I have noticed that the ones that say they only are going to take 5 minutes or less are the best ones. These are the best because they will ask you a few quick screening questions and they almost always prompt you in the end for a big money opinion survey, or a paid product test survey.
I think paid product test surveys are the highest paying because they usually require you to give your home address and then take a follow-up survey after you have used the product. They usually will dangle a good amount of money in front of you to prevent you from just getting the product for free and never taking the follow-up survey. For the market research company the follow-up survey is the most important part of the whole process so you can be assured that they definitely are going to pay you big money at the end of the survey. Another good thing about taking the quick 5 minute surveys is you will start to notice that once you are signed up with enough panels you can start to make good money even taking 50 cent surveys.
Most of the surveys say they take between 15-25 minutes, but I assure you I can knock out a 25 minute survey in about 5-7 minutes. It's not that I don't read the questions; it's just that I have been doing this every day for a while and the layouts of the survey all end up looking the same. Once you know the layout of the survey you can easily take it fast. Hope this helps. The way to get to real legitimate survey sites is much simpler than you think. There are enough people out there that are taking online surveys and getting burned. This works to your favor in the way that they are quickly blacklisted, and when they are, it will be permanently on search engines. All you really need to do is a complete market search and read the posts for scams and forums. People are definitely willing to help because of their experiences and on top of that, they will gladly give you a list of legitimate paid surveys.
